Back in "his day" oils were not compatable as they are today. Just about any good oil brand will state that it is compatable with other oils, meaning it can be used to top off/add to existing oil if needed.

Oil preference is always going to be a topic of interest. The only other advice I would offer is to use a good quality semi-synthetic or full synthetic. If you use semi-synthetic, you can get up to 7500 miles between changes, depending on the driving conditions you are in (dusty, or towing reduce the max mileage). If you use full synthetics, you can go longer.

IMO, using full synthetic and changing the oil every 4K or less is a waste of your money; switch to semi-synthetic and use that schedule, and save some coin.

I use now Mobil 1 5-30 high miliage but befor I used pensoil 10-30 for about 2 oil changed befor Mobil and I would change every 5-6 thousand and by that time it was dark I drive 95% city in miami I have 166,040 miles but I bought the truck last November (1 year ago) with 150,000 and my dumbass mechanic put 20-50 oil because that's all he had and since I had a loud tick ( it was a exhaust manifold leak) he thought it was the phasers and it will hell the ticking and I also a dumbass ran that oils 2 times and change every 3 and one I figured it out it was the exhaust I knew I could burn the engine up due to thick oil which dosent flow good with the small oil ports in the engine so I switch to 10-30 pensoil amd change 5-6 and I just did a trip to nc so I ran 5-30 since it was cold up there but for now on I'm gana stick to my Mobil and mc filter and I can tell a huge difference with the mc oil and other brands the mc filter is the way to go

You don't have to go I the dealer for the motorcraft. Advance auto parts carries different weights and filters in stock. They don't have full synthetic just a synthetic blend.

I run Mobil 1, and have been using it for as long as I can remember with good results. Smooth running engines, easy cold starts. You can find it virtually anywhere too. Truck gets serviced at the dealer and that's the synthetic they run. My dealer charges the same price as the cheapest lube shop in town, but they also rotate the tires and check the entire vehicle bumper to bumper. I'm sold on both the oil and the service.

Default Mobil 1 has been oil since 1st oil change

I've been using Mobil since the 1st oil change, first with 5W-20, then switched to 0W-20 when it came out. Did note a slight uptick in fuel mileage
with the 0W-20. For filters I've used the following: Motorcraft, Mobil 1, and lately tried the K & N Pro Series available for ordering thru Auto Zone.

I've been happy with Mobil 1, but should have done the semi-synthetic a bit longer than 3K on my first oil change. I was getting the blue smoke @ startup when the truck sat for a week or two w/o using it. I took it to the dealer, and he said all 5.4's can use some oil. He felt the oil rings were not fully seated causing some of the smoking only on startup. I took a 2500 mile trip to Yellowstonce about 3 yrs ago, pulling a 5000lb travel trailer. Ran great and didn't use any oil in the trip. It settled down and now I only add about 4-8 ounces of oil between oil changes. I've been changing it every 5-6K, or 6 mos-which every comes first.

Running great and no complaints1
