What just happened?
Started my 2005 F150 FX4 (135,000 miles) this morning, it ran for 30 seconds and something happened/broke. Anyway, it started running very rough and shut off. Now when I turn the key, all the electricals come on, but the truck will only turn over for a second. I'm worried the motor has locked up. Does that sound right? Maybe the timing chain broke and has foiled the engine? Oil was changed two days ago.
The truck has been a pain since coming off the lot new. 6 months ago, I replaced a broken valve spring, a year ago I replaced the flywheel, and cats need replacing.
Any suggestions?

Without knowing exactly what happened, there are issues with the injectors on the 5.4s that will flood the cylinder(s).
Remove the accessory drive belt and try starting it, occasionally a seized A/C compressor will cause those issues as well.
If it runs with the acc. drive belt removed, you've found the issue. If not, time to keep troubleshooting.

05's have known injector problems like Postal said. Could have injector stuck open and hydrolocked the motor. I would take it to Ford if still covered under the extended injector warranty.
Just reread your post and looks like you are past the warranty period.

x2 on the injectors, ford will warranty injectors on the 2005 5.4's up to 110,000 and if your engine seized they will replace the entire engine no cost to you.

Pulled the belt, turned the key, same result, just a loud thump.
Put a socket wrench on the bottom pulley and couldn't budge it. I'm thinking the motor seized up.
Once again, its the worst truck I've ever owned. And to repeat what someone in another post once said, by the time Ford realizes they have a problem, 100K is well in the rearview mirror.

If you pull the plugs you will be able to tell if it is hydro locked. It could possibly be a broken plug that fell into the cylinder or maybe a broken valve. I would pull the plugs and see if you can turn it by hand.
