since it is plastic i would guess you can remove it and make some ABS Bond (using abs shavings and acetone) and get some abs plastic (ebay hobby stores) and you can add a lip, close it in and add gauges or add a dvd player or head unit or brake controller. mp3 dock, cell charger dock, then paint it. the uses are endless untill then it is just usless lol

I've got an 05 XLT 5.4 4x4. I have captains chairs and the console. I also have the cupholder/ashtray and the cubby underneath.

This is my setup too. That little cubby is worthless so I never keep anything in it. Anything I put in there just slides out when I hit the gas. I tried keeping my cell phone in it but bending down to grab it while driving turned out to be a bad idea. I suppose lining it with a silicone pad would make it a little more useful.

I have an '05 STX with the center jump seat/fold down arm rest. I also have the ash tray/left and right cup holders in the spot that others have this mystery cubby.

Perhaps it had to do on where the truck was built? Or maybe what was in the assembly line parts bin that day?

oddly enough, as an athletic trainer, the only thing I keep in that stupid cubby is a roll of tape or two and when i used to, a can of dip on top of the tape. even then, it fell out pretty regularly.
