What do you guys think it is?
Ok so heres my video of my 2004 f150 doing it's World famous award winning diesel sounds. I also know i have a slight passenger manifold leak time to time when its warming up so could have some input with the sounds. But other than that I'm stuck between it being the valves having a little play or Cam Phaser sounds, or even both. The truck runs fine doesn't have any hiccups or anything for 205,000 miles! But figured if someones had it happen to theirs they would know the exact sounds it was making. In the video it was kind of a mid afternoon cold start so the fan and all that good stuff was winding up pretty good for a few minutes. But you can hear the phasers I'm pretty sure almost all the time. If i ever plan on tearing into it i'm getting the chains, tensioners, and phasers. Wish there was a better design that didn't have the flaw in it.
So the question is, Phasers, Leak, Valves, Injectors? or all of the above working in perfect harmony
I'm pretty positive on phasers but it's hard to tell if thats all there is too it. Already put new VCT solenoids in not long ago
Sorry for the left channel being the main mic, guess the S4 decided to use both for this video to make it sound odd.

Yes at 112k. The metallic tapping sound was audible inside cab. Buy an automotive stethoscope around $10 in ebay and you will be able to conform source. If you hear it while probing the valve cover that's your problem. The passenger side is usually louder. The easiest way to replace them is removing the cams. The most time consuming part of the job 70% of the work is removing the passenger side valve cover.

I agree with Primal. Sounds like you also have a bearing going out, making that whine. Get a stethoscope, like Primal said. It's kinda fun probing around with it listening to stuff.

What kind of bearing are ya talking about here lol. Could the compressor make a noise like that? Hopefully nothing deeply internal, but it doesnt usually do it just when warming up sometimes.

Hard to say because I'm listening on my phone speaker. It sounds exactly like my alternator whine though. I know mine is the alternator from using a stethoscope (actually I use a big freakin crow bar, but same concept). Once you get a stethoscope, poke around with it. If the alternator, or some other bearing sounds like a demon or something scary is trapped inside, then bingo.

A metal rod such as rebar will work just as good as a stethoscope. Just a little tip I thought I would throw at ya.
