Default Weekend Mods and Test Results

Brakes and a GT500 heat exchanger.

So I upgraded my rear brakes to Centric rotors with E-coating and EBC Yellow Stuff pads. I also added a stock GT500 Heat Exchanger to the truck. Still have the Whipple Fluidyne HE. Water hits it first then the GT500 HE and on to the intercooler.

The addition of a Jabsco Intercooler pump dropped my peak intake air temps to 126F. Down from 136F on a completely stock set up. Crusing around IAT's were always around 26-28F above ambient. Keep in mind my temp sensor is located about 3 inches from the intake valve of cylinder 5 so my readings take into account any heat sink from the intake manifold.

Here's some pics

Looking good! Ever thought of installing fans behind the H/E? Doesn't help much at highway speeds but in slow city driving it helped me a bunch. Wayne

Thanks Wayne! I have the Motorcraft Electric fans from the 2010 and up F-150 on my truck. Pulls enough air through the heat exchangers to hold the 11 page instruction manual from the Painless controller to the heat exchanger. lol

Great fans. Super strong.

My test for the heat exchangers has always been conducted with ambient temps of 71F. With the stock Whipple setup pushing 12 psi I would run 0-125mph back to back. Then 60-125mph. This produced peak intake air temps of 136F. The addition of a Jabsco Intercooler high volume intercooler pump
knocked this peak temp down to 126F. Also the system returned to normal operating temp in less then one minute.

I was able to make arrangments to repeat this test this weekend with ambient temps once again at 71F. My peak intake air temps were 110F. Thats a huge improvement and can be seen here on my SCT X3

Crusing on public roads my IAT's were down to just 15 degrees above ambient.

I didn't realize the H/E's were in front the radiator, I was assuming there were behind the bumper like the L.

That's a great improvement!

The Roush set up has heat exchanger located between the condenser and radiator. Stupid stupid stupid. Whipple locates out front. Heres a pic of mine stock with just the Whipple kit. HE out front of course

Awesome write up! Looks like the new heat exchanger is a factory clean fit..

How much was the gt500 HE?
How much was the jabsco pump?
How much thicker than the fluidyne HE is the GT500?
What were your intake manifold IAT's with the whipple kits stock bosch pump? Both before and after the Efans?

15 degrees above ambient! That's pretty damn good for a twin screw! I wonder if there is any other "easy" ways to bring down the IAT's to ambient? I'm pretty sure you've now done them all!....... How's the power difference? Is it very noticeable with those cooler temps at cruise?

Awesome write up! Looks like the new heat exchanger is a factory clean fit.. Thanks!!

How much was the gt500 HE? Got it on a trade but they are on ebay all the time. Seen them between $89-130.

How much was the jabsco pump? Bought it used for $125 last fall. New they are $200

How much thicker than the fluidyne HE is the GT500? The fluidyne piece is 1.25" thick and offers 139 sq in of surface cooling area and 209 cubic inches. GT500 piece is 2" thick offering 142sq in of surface and 303.75 cubic inches of cooling area.

What were your intake manifold IAT's with the whipple kits stock bosch pump? They peaked at 136F under 12psi with ambient temps of 71F.

Before and after the Efans? Never measured before the efans. I added them before I made any mods to the intercooler system. The belt fan is not half as strong as the Motorcraft electric fans. When the Motorcraft fans are on you can feel the movement of air in front of the grill opening and the lower bumper opening. They move some serious air.

.How's the power difference? I'll find out this Friday night when I go racing.

Is it very noticeable with those cooler temps at cruise? Haven't drive it enough to feel it yet. Doubt 10-15 degrees will be enough to feel just cruising around.
