While you have the VCT solenoids removed just spray some SeaFoam into the opening of the VCT valvebody. Spray it good and heavy and let it sit for a while. After getting the new solenoids installed and buttoning it back-up, I would run the engine for 10-15 minutes and change the oil.

If you have a 2007 or newer 5.4L 3V, the valve cover design changed and folks say you have to remove the valve cover to get the VCT solenoid out. I haven't heard of anyone getting around this PITA.

That being said ... while replacing your VCT solenoids is the best place to start, it is unlikely that they are the source of low-RPM rattling or clanking. I think I've read that a time or two guys have had positive results with just the installation of the newest version of the solenoids. But the vast majority of people (like myself) find that it makes no difference at all.

I can't be 100% certain what my issue was, but I replaced both phasers and all the timing components (chains, guides, tensioners, etc.) While this engine is still too noisy for my taste, I think what I have now is "normal" valve train and injector noise. I sure hope it lasts.
Sorry grimace just now saw your post. I have a 05 5.4 3v. I can't find any how tos on how to replace them or any videos... I actually don't even know what the vcts even do, I think I read before though that they cause the clanking sound from these engines... Lol I am just learning about engines so cut me some slack... Where r tey even located??

The VCT Seals are located in the valvecovers, near the front of the engine. Here's a picture of my passenger-side VCT solenoid.

Notice the item near the middle of the picture with the cable plugged into it. That is the VCT solenoid. You disconnect that cable, work that black seal around it out, and then there is a T27 Torx bolt holding the VCT solenoid in place. You'll probably need a flashlight to see in there.

Have a look at this thread...

EDIT: BTW - the one on the passenger side valve cover is hidden/obscured by the power-steering reservoir and bracket.

One more thing ... this site is awesome, but if it's in your budget, consider buying the Chilton or Haynes manual for the 2004-2009 Ford F150. It's a plethora of info at your fingertips.

2 VCT's is all. yes it is a T27 torx down inside the engine. I have the new style valve covers on mine since it is a late year 2006 engine but here is a picture of what mine look like with the wires removed and seals half way out.

Are they like located by the spark plugs? Or up close to the firewall? So basically u get the new solenoids with seals and take the old seal and solenoid out and out the new seal and solenoid in?
