VCT solenoid problems without Cam Phaser issues?
Hello everyone,
I read a couple of subtle methods to determine if you can change out your VCT solenoid and improve drivability and quiet down the engine. Is there a test of sorts (truck in park, foot on brake, increase RPM to 1500 and listen for something..?) It seems that if you can determine your problems are from the VCT sensors, it's a huge time and money saver. Any thoughts?

If you're talking about the VCT solenoids, You can unplug them and see if it cures your symptoms. Other than that, physically remove the solenoids and inspect the oil screens and such. Hell, I would just replace them with the latest revision (improvements). They run about $100 for the pair...

I just replaced mine this past weekend, very easy and relatively cheap, all you need is a t20 torque. Made a huge difference with the new ones in there.
Here's a good video to show how it's done, good luck !

04-06 models this video will work. For 07-08 trucks it will be slightly different as you will need to remove the valve cover to change the solenoid.

04-06 they have a hole in the valve covers with a plug big enough for the solenoid to be removed through as shown in the video. Other year models the solenoid wont fit through the hole. I think the hole is smaller.

Thanks CStrain, yes it does sounds like a diesel. Can you tell me exactly what they take care of if they're functioning properly? And what is happening if you leave the old damaged ones in there? What are the symptoms besides the dieseling noise? Power/driveability?
Thanks!
Thanks!
