Default VCT Lockout Tuning Help

Hey guys,

Needing a little assistance. I have a 2008 F150 5.4 3v. I am completing the VCT lockout kit and am trying to figure out how to properly tune it. I know HPtuners will allow you just to uncheck the VCT enable box, however won't the truck go into limp mode? The lockout kit locks the cam phasers in full advanced position. Is there anything else that I must change also? For example what would livernois Motorsport change in the tune they sell for like $700? Thank you so much

Doesn't a lock out kit usually come with a tune specifically for that lock out?

You can buy them separate, that is what I did because I plan to use HP Tuners to complete the task.

Ok I see. I don't have a lockout or a tuner so not much help. Just remember the ones I saw came with a custom tune. Best of luck!

Can you not ask HP Tuners what needs to be done on the tune? Aren't they the ones that will write the tune? Also, are your chain guides good, chain not stretched, lash adjusters good and not scored and your oil pressure readings good/oil pump good? Wondering why you chose lockouts.

Hp tuners is a DIY tuning platform. They supply the hardware and software and you write the tune.i am replacing the oil pump, timing chain set, steel tensioners, and installing lockouts. My goal is to eliminate the noise and protect against failure. Thanks

Sounds good as long as you drop the oil pan if there was any inkling of guide pieces missing. Wish I could help with the tuning. This is the first I have hear of HP Tuners. That'll give me something to research.

So HP Tuners wants $500 for their software and I assume the lockouts were around $70. Given that pricing, I would have ponied up the $700 for Livernois all in one with support (which according to reviews is amazing).

The idea to use HPtuners vs. letting Livernois tune it is not entirely due to pricing. If Livernois tunes the truck you will spend the $700 on one tune. If you purchase HPtuners you will have that software for the remainder of time that you have the vehicle. If you make any modifications you will be able to tune it again and again. Also HPtuners scanner portion is a valuable diagnostic tool. Thats my thought process i guess...

The terms "lockouts" ... and "protect against failure" seem contra to one another. Lockouts force all traces shown on the following graph to flatline zero - irrespective of the white dashed line (Engine Load). Seems like that is actually a FORCED failure of the VVT system. How does that "protect against failure"? when all the other new parts are installed?
