Default Used truck check list

Hey all, I'm going to be looking at a couple of trucks here soon and wanted to make sure I go over everything properly so I don't get screwed.
I'm going to be looking at an 05 FX4 with 143k and a 08 Fx4 with 133k.
I've read about the ticking noise that could be the phasers and the grinding/ whining of the IWE system. Also about the plug issue they had before the build date of 10/2007, I believe? So on the 08 I should hopefully see brown plug covers, correct?
So besides those issues and the normal used vehicle checklist, is there anything else I should focus on with these trucks? As far as the ticking noise, is it pretty distinct? Should I buy the truck is I do hear it and ask them to lower the price?

Thanks for your help

These engines tick a lot. They can have noisy injectors, or leaks in the manifold. The phaser noise is more a diesel sound and is ONLY present between idle and I think 1200 RPM also it is only present at full warm operating temperature. Look up cam phaser noise on YouTube and listen to some of them on there. There are different degrees of bad when it comes to the phasers some more faint than others and some louder.

Thank you for the info. I'll check out those videos.

Welcome back! 2009 join date and three posts!?

Were phasers updated around 2007? As I recall at some point ones with stronger springs? started to be used at some point.

My 2004 5.4L makes a couple seconds of noise at some startups, and when very hot idling at about 525 RPM sounds like a panting dog. Nothing remarkable though.

Haha, I'm thinking I was looking at getting an F150 back then, but I don't remember what I ended up getting.
I'm really hoping these trucks will still be for sale when I get back from vacation. I can't look at them until next wednesday
I'd like to get the 08, because for only $1000 more it's 3 years newer with less build problems and it has 10k less miles.
