Default Upcoming project: Tackling undercarriage surface rust

I recently bought my 2004 F-150, and I have the pleasure of living in New England, where salt and the "green stuff" loves to eat away at everything it touches. The previous owner made trips from CT to VT in the winter and the undercarriage has a ton of surface rust. Everything from the leafs springs to the diff cover to the frame. Nothing is rotting through...yet.

I know there is a million threads with mention of rust and removal but I wanted to see if anyone has had experience with this.

My plan is to pressure wash everything, take a wire brush and go to town, then paint a coat of POR15 on everything I can reach.

Has anyone had experience with using POR15? I know a little about it (pricey, need to wear protective gear, and so on..)

Last question is would it be worth the extra work to remove the bed so I can have easy access to everything? Or just use jacks? I'm thinking with prep and work and drying this will take a few days. I am not the most mechanically inclined around, so I don't want to go too crazy taking things apart...

Only 66k on it, so hoping to keep it for a while with some good care.

Sand blaster might save you some time. I'm planning on doing this as well. Live in the northeast destroys vehicles...

Hey, before my Ford, I owned a 2003 tacoma. Those things are known to have the frames rot out on them like none other. I used to browse around on TacomaWorld like I do this site, and remember coming across a few awesome threads of people restoring all the undercarriage rust and taking care of it all.

If I were you, poke your head around there and use the search function, I guarantee you'll find something!

Good luck
