Default UGHH! "transmission malfunction" and o/d light blinking

Hey guys,

Went mudding this weekend, just about done with the day and was pulling my buddy out from a tough spot, and I got a message in the message center saying "Transmission Malcunction" and the o/d light is blinking. The truck doesn't shift out of 3rd gear. When I manuallyu put the shifter in 1st, the truck doesn't move. Other wise, the truck just takes a while to get up to speed starting out in 3rd gear.

04 5.4 4x4 Auto.

HELP!!!

i hooked up this most kickass scanner that autozone sold and it reported "No codes". Do you think that the dealer's scanner will read something that I couldn't?

your transmission put itself into a "limp" mode. as stated get the codes and find out what the issue is. something could have happend in one of the gears, could be permanant could have been a one time issue. but generally the truck needs to be put on a computer to get the tranny out of that limp mode.

if the OD light is flashing there is a code somewhere. your scanner may not be able to pick up tranny codes. the more expensive ones like Snapon's solus do. but they are in the area of $8k-15k a piece.

it could be try, but like I said ealier once you tranny goes into that limp mode or cycle it usually needs to be brought out of it by another computer. so its kind of hard telling not knowing what the tranny is saying. IMO I think you should take it to a tranny shop, or at lest someone who deals with trannys. they will have the proper tools to diagnose it. its one of those thing that I just leave to the pros. give me an engine any day. but working on trannys

what happend just befoe the tranny malfunction came up? shuttering? slaming? grinding?

it sounds like your solenoids are toast....probably need a new trans...did you drop the pan by chance? try unhooking the battery and resetting the computer? did something get ripped off? we have destroyed alot of things while mudding in the good ole days...
