it doesnt require one but it makes it a whole lot easier. you can use the BFH and socket method or get the tool and save your self some agravation.

What year truck? Ford made some driveshafts for these that had staked in u-joints. If there is a journal cut into the yoke on the outside of the caps then you can change them, if not then you have to buy a new complete shaft. Post a pic of the yoke where the clips would normally be.
