I've used a small amount of car wash soap and a toothbrush. Just mask off the paint around the black part, as the toothbrush bristles can dull the paint.

From the infomercial, they say you can apply the Turtle Wax Ice body wax on black plastic, and it will not leave white particles like conventional wax does.

I still continue to use paste carnuba though; leaves the best shine, and lasts months; I also mask off black plastic surfaces.

The girl who ran the detail shop where I worked said you can use ammonia to get rid of the residue; though I have never tried it.

I have usually found that being very careful when waxing, to avoid getting too much on to the plastic, then rubbing any I do get on it off with a hand towel works pretty good.

I'm glad that someone mentioned Ice, I've been meaning to try it. I like that you can apply it over the plastic trim.
I generally have been using Maguires cleaner/wax then applying a coat or two of Maguires Gold.
