Turns out...
Smoked tail lights aren't legal in Texas so the lights I smoked four days ago had to be "unsmoked" today so I could pass inspection... awesome. It took me about an hour to sand them back down because I did a really good job smoking them. That sucked.
Maybe I should have done more research first...maybe...

no they just have black around the edges of the light, smoked is the whole tail light black
to the OP, you could just get some avs snap on covers for them and take them off for inspections, i niteshaded mine but it has faded a lot in less than a year so eventually ill get some covers because they cant fade

Well now I'm torn with how they look. I really liked them smoked, and would definitely do them again. Now they're sanded and not buffed. I also left a ring of black around the edge where it bends back down towards the body of the truck. They look good this way too, I just liked having the smoked lights. Freakin sucks. I asked if my LED bar (has break, turns, and reverse) would make up for smoked tail lights and the inspector guy said no because it has to be stock lighting. Not sure how I feel about that. What would happen if I shaved my tail lights? Is that not an option in TX?

shaved?
just get some covers then they will look perfectly painted but all you have to do is pop them off and on instead of sanding and repainting at every inspection, also the covers let more light shine through then painted tails the same darkness.

Unfortunately I'm not a fan of them. If i liked them then I'd do that for sure, but for some reason there's a huge difference between the VHT painted ones and the covers.

Theres a guy on a ranger site that used "20%" static cling window film to black out his taillights. doesn't look very hard, and the smooth shape of f150 tails would make it easy to apply.
he had pics of it lit up as well, it was surprising how much light shined through.
buy a roll at walmart, and have enough to peel them off every year for inspection, then re-do. and add in the occasional traffic stop.
I'll try it once i get black headlights, not much is enforced in arkansas.

I have my tails smoked and when i have to go get the inspection i use my neighbors tail lights to pass. i have never had any kind of problems with the cops here in the dallas area. tons of people around here have their cars, trucks and suvs with smoked tail lights.
