Funny.... I hear more horror stories about the 5.4 being garbage over the 4.6. Yeah, the 4.6 has less power, but it has less issues.

unless we are talking about a dohc variant 4.6, terminator 4.6, a lightning 5.4, dohc 5.4 variant - the rest are garbage. It takes a fortune to make any power out of them, even with the PI heads.

I've had them all.

Ouch... I was mainly just curious if 1. If it was possible and 2. If anyone had ever done it, or something similar.

2) buy a takeout LS variant (LQ4, etc...) with trans and harness for about 2k
3) pay the $500 for one of the harness gurus to make an adapter that will tie the gm harness to the ford harness so all the gauges work
4) google 'sloppy guide to build turbo lsx engines'
5) follow his very explicit directions and parts list
6) download his tune file
7) find someone with hp tuners that will upload sloppy's tune into your ECM
8) lengthen / shorten your driveshaft as the case may be
9) enjoy 600rwhp and 20mpg
I'm curious, is this from personal experience, or just theory? My other question is, did you have to modify anything else for the gm engine to fit in the Ford engine bay?

it isn't personal experience but it isn't theory either. The guy (sloppy mechanic) is the guy that built the turbo LS Fairmont that was on Pinks and in Hot Rod magazine - ran low 10's with a junkyard engine/trans/turbo.

You'd have to fab engine/trans mounts but that's relatively easy if you can weld.

it is very doable and would be much cheaper than trying to get similar power out of a sohc 4.6.

I was posting more as a joke than anything given most folks aren't too keen on ripping out their powerplant and stabbing in something from another manufacturer - the logic behind it is sound though and would absolutely produce the results I alluded to in my earlier post.

If I could transplant an LS7 without losing all the Raptor electronic goodies I would have done it already.

Noooooo! Lol. I hate it when people do cross breed trucks with different power plants, but i get it. A GM small block is a GM small block and very easy to get parts.

To the OP: there are a lot of LS swaps that have taken place with work arounds for the application like mentioned by WarSurfer. While you may be inexperienced doing this, it doesn't mean you aren't able to look at professional/amateur builds to see where they succeeded or failed. You can get a general idea of time and cost from what they have done.

I'm going with an LS6 in my 71 chevelle that I already fabbed a tremic T56 6 speed in.. When it comes to power plant swaps the LS motors are the absolute best.. I hate Chevy, post 2008 mostly, because I'm a principled guy.. but I can't argue with the price and mods available for their products.

OP..
Make that turbo happen. You gotta get your hands dirty and just do it sometimes..

Btw, ask all the questions you want, you'll never learn anything if you don't ask. Your in the right place..
My 04 f150 is supercharged.. It's very easy to bolt on these kits. A turbo is gonna be tougher, but a good start is gonna come from buying some short tube headers, bolt them on backwards so they dump toward the radiator and start fabbing a y pipe for a single turbo.. I was gonna try a turbo job but have up when I found my whipple SC.. It's not too hard, just gotta be good with fab..

Here's a couple articles that might help you. Don't be scared to try it.....well, within reason anyways. It won't be cheap, but it should be worth it if you do it correctly.
