Default Truck using exceive amount of oil

First off I have an 05 with the 5.4. The truck has 215k miles on the clock. I change the oil approx. every 3k with motorcraft 5w20. On my last oil change they told me before they changed the oil it wasn't even showing on the dipstick. So after the oil change I checked it after about 1000 miles and it was about a half a quart low. Now 2000 miles later it is a good ways below the first hole on the dip stick. What is causing it to burn all this oil. Never seen a drop of oil leak from it. And might smoke for a couple seconds at start up. Thank you

Man I had this problem with my 04 5.4 and was pulling my hair out as it just seemed to come out of nowhere. The truck never used any oil and as soon as it rolled over 100k it started using 1 quart every 1000 miles which was unacceptable to me.
After a lot of reading on this forum I saw a lot of guys switching to Mobil 1 5w30 and having good results. I found it at Walmart in a high mileage version and am happy to report that after 3-4 oil changes it has basically stopped using oil.

I was having the same problem with my jeep, it ended up being a leaky head gasket seeping oil into the coolant.
