John,

I've been looking at the FX4 and am hoping to get one soon. Actually besides trim, the FX4 also has skid plates, off road shocks, and a locking differential (rear end) which aren't available on the other models. So if someone is planning on going over rocks and other rough things off road, the FX4 is the best option. Now I'm sure these can be added but why bother as the FX4 comes ready to go off road.

do you plan on doing upgrades to the truck??

when i bought my '03, i just stuck with the regular 4x4 package and went sans FX4. I knew that within a year or so i would be building her up. The only difference between mine and an FX4 was the wheels, tires, and shocks. the axles (and their ratios) were the same and so was the factory Limited slip, but even so, within 2 years of ownership i lifted the truck, put on a bigger set of wheels and tires, re-geared, and added a detroit tru-trac. So any extra money i would have spent on an FX4 package would have been wasted. And just for the heck of it, i bought the FX4 decals from the body shop and put them on when i was all done. SSSHHHHHHH!!!!!! don't tell anyone!!!!

..missed this question. I'll take some tomorrow when I find a place for my Livewire and post em up.

if your looking for an offroad vehicle i really wouldnt go with an f150. i mean if you need the towing capabilities then you need the truck but if your looking a fun wheeling truck id defintly go else where. ive owned alot of 4x4's and for how large these trucks are there not meant for wheelin. something like a wrangler, an fx4 ranger, a toyota fj cruiser are all really capable lighter vehicles that will take you many more places. o and if your planning on modding the truck fx4 isnt worth the extra $. your going to be replacing all the stuff that they have upgraded for you already especially with lifts and regearing. just make sure you get the 3.73 gearing and ls rear diff.

Every F-150 I have ever owned has been amazing for 4x4. If you are one of those Jeep guys that lifts it and throws 37inch tires you would never be able to go the places i do without rollin like a log of in the toilet.

I do agree with you about the FJ's but they are disgusting lookin..

The ranger is a great idea as they are light as hell and you can throw some mean power in there for $$.

The F-150 can do the whole deal 4x4, towin, daily drivin...

If I had to do it all over again I'd probably go FX4.

When I bought my lariat in 04, I wanted an FX4 but all my dealer had on the lot at the time was a yellow fx4 and a white one. I wanted red or Dark blue. After talking with the salesmanager, I went with a black lariat. There were a lot more extras that came standard on my truck that I would have been paying extra to get with the FX4. I liked the interior trim better in the lariat. I haul alot but I don't get offroad very often. The only thing that I didn't like about my lariat was the regualr axel because its a supercab. The supercrews come standard with the limited slip. If interior gadgets and trim are not a big deal, go with the FX4. I enjoy having all the extra little stuff on my lariat that my 02 FX4 didn't have. If I were to buy an 09, it would probably be another lariat because I have gotten so comfortable with all the extra little stuff.

Both packages will serve you we'll. I wanted to lift my truck right away, so I knew that I'd be replacing shocks and skid plates that come with the FX4 package. This reduced the advantage of the FX4 for me. More importantly, I liked having the added creature comforts of the Lariat. I have no regrets in selecting the Lariat, and haven't found any situation where the FX4 would have performed better. Either way, you're F150 4x4 will be very capable.

Well everyone i went to the dealership to have a look around, get prices, etc... I still haven't made up my mind for sure what i will get. I liked the interior in the Lariats but I'm not that big on looks because i will just dirty her up anyway. I then had a look at the XLT and liked it because it isnt all luxurious inside and keeps it simple but still appealing. From what i understood from the guy i can get everything the FX4 had put into the XLT such as Limitted slip, skid plate, tow hooks, etc... for cheaper. So I will decide this week if i want to get the XLT or just for the FX4. I will keep everyone posted. If anyone has comment please feel free to say them, it would help me alot.
