Pull the pan and instal drain plug kit in it.

OP:
Put in a drain plug and you won't have to make an elaborate process or event out of changing your tranny fluid.. You really should change it every 30k miles or sooner after you cycle the fresh fluid in. I drain my Trans fluid ever other oil change, it usually takes 10 minutes with the drain plug..
The gradual cleansing of multiple drain and fills is the best way to go.. It's also the safest.
