transmittion flush or drop??
iv done a lot of research and i can't determin on what to do.
2004 f150 (newbody style) xlt 4x4
let me start that i got my truck in december of 2013 (before christmas) and im not sure if the previous owner did any regular maintenance. i got the truck with 150,xxx miles and now im at 162,xxx miles. i always wanted to change the fluid in the transmission but never had the time and yesterday i checked the fluid level (with engine and tranny hot running in idle) and nothing showed on the stick i checked it a couple times and nothing showed on the stick ( i think im low) now iv read some people saying with high mileage tranny not to do a flush and just drop the pan and replace the filter and thats the question which is best at this point im not sure . now when i turned off the engine and let it cool i checked the stick and it was in the middle of the cold mark i smelled it and docent seemed burnt and is kinda pink so i need some help . im a 18 year old thats wats to become a mechanic and i like to take care of my stuff so any suggestion will be great
and to day i was driving and i saw a red light so i cruised to the light and it turned green before i got there ( around 30 mph) and when i accelerated the tranny kicked really hard ( the first time) also there are no leaks in the hoses or tranny so im not sure why the fluid is low and dosent seem to slip

Read this thread. Especial86 did a great job making it and many people (including me) have done this with great results.

I just flushed my system and installed a new filter this past week, at 167,000 miles. Flushed all 14 quarts at once using the method below. Took about 2 hours from start to cleanup.
I also had some seriously harsh downshifts that have since gone away....

Mines got 205k on it. Got it with 185k just did a pan drop + filter and gasket. Then they fill it back up until it says full. Flushing them kills them, sends all the loose particles back into the gears and stuff because the filter is new and hasn't caught them yet.
