transmission went down today.
Well after reading about everyone elses transmission issues i just figured i was lucky. With 185k miles if it were going to break it would have already.... not true. Today on my way home from work, after years of trouble free service from the tranny, it just lost overdrive.
A quick trip to the tranny shop and i got a $2500 quote for complete rebuild. New planetary and all.
So to date. 185k miles. One spark plug change, new rotors and brakes all the way around, new wheel bearings, axle seals, and pinion seal in the rear end and some basic fluid changes.....and a few sets of tires. Original engine and valve train.
Not bad. Im gonna get her fixed up and shoot for 300k!

Add-on question:
If I'm not mistaken, we're not recommended to fully flush it after around 75kmi or so, but do a pan drop, so that all-new fluid doesn't flush the built-in gunk out of the plates that they've started using for grip. Is this correct? I did a pan drop filter change when I bought the truck about 20,000mi ago and left it at that.

I'm just interested if the original transmission fluid got the OP to 185K before it failed.
At this point, he will be rebuilding it, or having a rebuilt unit installed. I'm sure a good transmission shop will flush the lines that run to the radiator/transmission cooler prior to the completed install; this will prevent any potential metal that is in the lines from when the original transmission failed to get into the new transmission.

I know the scrap yards around here sell them for about $125 as-is. Then you can get a rebuild kit for around $200 if you feel like doing it yourself.
