Default Transmission warranty?

Hello,

Im new to this and am not sure this is the correct place for my question but here goes. I have a 2006 FX4 with 35" tires and about 3" lift. I just cranked over 100,000 miles and like magic my transmission crapped out. Aamco wants $2500 for a complete rebuild and offers a 1 year 12,000 warranty. When I called Ford their rebuilt tranny comes with 3 year unlimited warranty but costs almost $1200 more. When I asked about extending the warranty aamco said they would give me 3 year 36,000 for $500 more. Do you think its worth another $500 for two more years?? The day before when I was talking with him (before he had me with the tranny disassembled he said warranty over 12k 1 year is not really needed as a bad tranny will go out sooner rather than latter.

Opinions??

Im drifting toward yes as the 35's (with stock gearing) are pretty hard on the tranny.

Or what you could do is not get the extended warranty and put the 500 bucks towards re gearing the rear end. If you don't you'll keep throwing trannys in it sooner or later.

Hi Bulldog4X4,

Same issue with me. I have a 2006 F150. My tranny went out on me last year Feb 2015. I had 190,000 miles on it. I regret taking it to AMCO. But it's to late for remorse. I paid about the same with them for a 1 year or 12,000 mile warranty. When I went for an oil change at a service station (Walmart) they told me that I had a transmission leak. I immediately took it back to AMCO and told them about it. They confirmed it was a minor leak. It was coming from the pan gasket. They repaired it. If you have AAA you can contact them and see if they have any local AAA certified mechanics that can do this work. I didn't realize this until after that fact But i learned my lesson for next time. Good luck and I hope you get you truck back up and running.

Whenever buying an extended warranty, you have to decide if you plan to keep the truck that long. Most warranties such as this are not transferable to a new owner; establishments make a good profit selling these types of warranties based on this. Ask if the warranty is transferable, and if so, is there an additional cost. It could be a good selling point if/when you sell the truck.

Also as mentioned, those tires are not helping the transmission last a long time, unless you also had the rear diff re-geared. Seeing as how it's a 4x4, then the front has to be re-geared as well.

And in your case with 35''s and a lift, be sure to have a complete transmission fluid change every 30 to 50K. Heat is an automatic transmissions biggest factor in wear/failure. Heat will break down the fluid. Running larger tires will place a strain on it; towing will too. Consider adding a larger transmission cooler to help remove heat from the fluid.

Check your credit cards for free warranty extensions they may offer, then verify this would be covered.

You actually need to go up not down. If you're going to continue running 35's, you need to go up to at least 4.11 - some would say 4.56 but it's your decision. You'll see a bit higher RPM at crusing speed with the bigger of the two.

And perhaps get a transmission rebuild to a more "sturdier" unit.

the common favorite that I see is 4.56. Good for the size you are running
