Default Transmission shift cable

Hey guys I have 05 Ford F-150 XLT RWD. I've been searching a few post, but really can't find what I'm looking for. Does anyone know or have a step by step procedure to replacing the transmission shift cable? Or adjusting it with pictures?

When I put it into park it won't shift into park, I crawled underneath my truck and found that the cable bends before it tries to put into park. It seems a little loose, is there a way I can adjust it? if so anyone got pictures or steps on running me to doing this?

- thanks

When mine stopped working it was because a clip failed and it was resting on the manifold melting away. I would check you have clearance and that clip hasn't failed, its about 6-8 inches past the firewall.

The adjustment is made at the transmission. You will see a white plastic piece with a clip on it. You pop the clip UP and it will slide back and forth on the plastic. Best to have someone put the shifter in drive and then you manually set it at the transmission to the drive gear and fasten the clip back on the plastic.

When you explain it bends before it goes into park seems like the cable isn't operating properly and may need to be replaced. I have the colum shifter and was pretty simple to figure out as your removing the old one.

Same thing happened to me. Melted straight through.
I had to order one from the dealer, but for the few days tat I had to wait, I had to crawl under the truck, and slide the linkage into park every time I stopped.
Replacement was pretty easy.
Reminds me to check mine out, to make sure it isn't rubbing the manifold again.

I had this happen twice. The first time I had a mechanic replace it with a new one. Lasted about 2 years then same thing.

The second time I bought a pack of springs from an auto parts store that were about 4-6" long and about the diameter of the outside of the cable. I wrapped the spring around the cable where the exhaust had melted through it (so the cable was running through the inside of the spring), then taped it off with some aluminum heat tape.

It's been on there 3 years and I just checked it out when I was removing the engine from the truck a couple weekends ago and it still looks perfect.

So I got the new transmission shift cable, installed and everything works perfect, but for one thing that doesn't work or kinda just goes off and on is my reverse lights. I've tried adjusting the cable and what not and tried re-installing it, but it's still the same. Anyone know what the issue would be?

Thanks

Check the wires going to the neutral safety switch while you are under the truck, it plugs into your transmission. If the wires are shorted or the plug not making a good connection, the reverse lights can be intermittent. Had the same issues on a car I used to have and that's what it was, plug was loose and not making a good connection.

Is this a problem with floor console shifters or column mounted shifters?
