Transmission fluid/dipstick level question
#11
Yes mine is a 2007 2WD with the 5.4 flex-fuel. I finally found the part # on fordparts.com and it just references the "7A020" as a part #, so I am certain its the correct dipstick. I will monitor the fluid level on one or two more drives home from work and may take out 1/2 quart at a time to get the level down a little. Thanks for checking the length for me!

No problem, hope you figure it out. I would probably only take out about a pint at a time though, just adding a little at a time really raises it on the dipstick, a pint at a time may get you closer to getting it spot on. Good luck.

I'm kind of leaning towards leaving it alone. If the truck is shifting great at the level it's at, I'd be more inclined to go with that rather then making it correct on the dipstick and not shifting as well. Sounds like you don't have any side effects of having a little extra in there, so I say leave it and enjoy your truck.

I just did the filter and refill on my 2007 XL. Its a 5.4L 2WD, and I put 6 quarts in it.
After 5 it was still low and so I put another quart in and it is a little over full. But, it shifts great and I'm hoping after driving it a bit more it may level out.

Mine took 5.5 quarts after the initial pan drop and filter change. I had it exactly at the top of the full mark and the hard downshifting and driveline clunk started. So I added another 1/2 quart and it helped a little, then I added another 1/2 quart and all odd downshifting and driveline clunks stopped. I thought it was my Edge Evolution but it kept coming back every few days after messing with the shift firmness.
Side note, my manual does say to check after normal operating temp, on a level surface with the transmission in Park after running it through the gears slowly. Not sure why I checked it in Neutral, just always have.

Neutral introduces a load from the engine where park does not.. They probably changed the procedure via manual to alleviate runaway vehicles in neutral while checking the fluid... For liability reasons I would guess..
I always check in neutral, on level ground when warm.. I slightly under fill my tranny after a drain, then warm it up.. I top it off once the fluid is warm and well circulated.. It usually only takes a few tiny sips from a quart to get the fluid level perfect after.
