Just bought a 05 F150 with 112k miles. Tranny fluid is origanal. I see a service tranny change only changes 6 qts and the system holds like 13. Should I take it to the dealer for a complete flush then change the filter for just service myself changing the 6 qts and the filter?

you will find opinions for both sides... because of the long miles with the same fluid, maybe refreshing it a bit (like changing only 6qts) will be better than a flush.

Thanks! Yea, I changed the spark plugs on friday and it went very well. No broken plugs and it runs better and more pep!

i have never changed tranny fluid, but i have researched how to. if it were my truck, i believe i would flush the tranny and fill her with new fluid, all 13 quarts. of course that will be a bit more $ and will require some researching if you are unfamiliar with the procedures, but i am convinced that it can prolong the life of your transmission

As was stated before you will get a lot of opinions on this topic. I Just did this and because my fluid still looked red and did not smell burnt. I dropped the pan, changed the filter and added a little over 4 quarts of fluid along with some trans honey. I will do it again next year minus the filter. Have fun what ever you do.

Any opinions on the debate whether you should even change transmission fluid if it's been a long time? Many say that the flush is more likely to create a problem than solve one. Thoughts?

This topic has been discussed to death....if you do a search on "flush" or "transmission flush", you will find an abundance of posts and opinions.

Me personally, I would do a complete flush. Adding 6 quarts to a 13 quart system would only "pollute" those 6 fresh quarts. To me it's like changing only 3 or 4 quarts of engine oil, and leaving the rest in. In your case, the transmission fluid is way over it's life expectancy.

I have flushed mine twice now, once at 30K, and the second at 60K. I also have a transmission cooler to keep it's heat down, as heat is the number one failure reason for automatic transmission failure. For the record, I have had no transmission issues/failures, and I currently have 86K on it.
