A transfer case has no clutches so it doesn't matter insofar as it will not damage the case BUT, I think MercV is synthetic (which would explain the price ) and may be more prone to leakage in a high mileage unit. Straight Dexron/Mercon should be very easy to obtain and a lot cheaper.

Ford dealer should have it in stock. In case they don't it's on Amazon.

Amazon.com: Genuine Ford Fluid XL-12 Transfer Case Fluid - 1 Quart: Automotive Amazon.com: Genuine Ford Fluid XL-12 Transfer Case Fluid - 1 Quart: Automotive

Kind of high though, I believe it is much cheaper than that from a parts counter.

Dealer quoted me 8 bucks a quart for TCF and $7.50 a quart for 5w-20. They are cheaper than Amazon!

Default Transfer Case Fluid?

I own a 2004 F150 and live in Canada
I just spoke with the Ford Dealership in my Area to get some of the XL-12 transfer case fluid however they've advised me that it has been Discontinued here and to not use the Mercon-V but to now Use the Mercon-LV
Just wanted to make sure everyone is up to date, not sure if the states has also Discontinued the XL-12 but give Ford a call and they will let you know. April, 22, 2019
