Default Transfer case

I have a 2004 F-150 5.4 4x4 that also has a transfer case leak.

Here's what my manual says for the transfer case (mine is electric shift on the fly):

Fluid: Motorcraft MERCON ATF
Application: 4x4 vehicles
Capacity: 1.9L (2.0 quarts)

It goes on to say: "Service refill capacity is determined by filling the transfer case to the bottom of the filler hole with the vehicle on a level surface"

There's also a note about not using dual use fluids (MERCON and MERCON V) in an automatic transmission application requiring MERCON. I find the whole MERCON/MERCON V issue confusing so I just use MERCON when it says MERCON and MERCON V or dual use when it says MERCON V.

I changed my transfer case fluid (difficult to tell how often the manual recommends doing this... if you call it a transaxle it could be as often as every 30k)

A 3/8" socket wrench (with no socket on it) fits into the drain and fill plugs.

It's a pain getting fluid into the fill plug because there's not a lot of room. I cut a plastic funnel in half (sort of) and stuck that in the fill hole and poured into that. I still spilled some.

Let me know if you find where that leak is coming from!

You can download one PDF file...or suggest you buy a Chiltons or Haynes repair manual at your local auto parts...they will help you alot. Good luck with your LEAK....
