Default Trans rebuild

So got the bad news that my 06 F150 XLT 5.4L needs to be fixed.

I guess I have 3 options?

1) Get a brand new one

2) get it partially repaired

3) get a used one

Correct me if I'm wrong, but those are my options.

It has 140k miles on it, I'm two years from graduating and am looking to only have the truck for a few more years (probally gonna hit 200k by the time I wanna sell it) What route should I try and go?

Also,
does anyone have any idea on prices for the 3 options from above?
Also- Has anyone delt with Aamco and how is their service/ pricing? I got a ball park from the auto repair shop today for 3k but he has to get back to me Monday.
Thanks

I've gone through 2 in 5 years of ownership...either I'm hard on stuff, or I have bad luck. I think it's a combo of both.

Anyways, first I had a remanufactured unit put in by Ford for $3400 and it came with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. That was right after I bought the truck

Last month I lost over drive which required a rebuild, took it to a local transmission shop and it was $2630.

For you I'd recommend a rebuild if you're tight on money, just try to find a good shop, I've heard mixed reviews about aamco.

Depending if youra is rebuildable.. and gow much damage waa done.. i just put a used tranny in mine with 75k miles for 750 bucks.

Look at salavge yards.

I say buy the used and pay the labor to get it installed. With a new filter

I think I'd be leaning toward a rebuild in your case. It should be the lowest cost option with the most predictable outcome. A junk yard tranny could work, but it might also be bad and you won't know until you do all the work of installing it in your truck. Who needs that? I'm not up the the latest pricing, but if they are already suggesting a $3K repair, I'd be looking elsewhere. It can't me that much more for a reman. Like WhiteF150 said above, I think 1400-1500 should get you your tranny rebuilt.

I think the 3k (900 for Labor) and 2000$ ish for a new one. I'm still waiting for a written quote I'll get tomorrow. I told him I want all 3 (brand new, rebuild the current one, and get a used one).

I'm at Virginia Tech (Jr. in civil engineering) and my father who does most the work on my truck said to try and drive it back to New Jersey (where I am from) and get a quote locally there but I was gonna try and see Aamco's price for the 3 options I said above then make a choice.

Driving back to Jersey on a bad tranny sounds like a risky trip. Good luck with it. I hope they give you a fair deal so you can fix it there and be done with it. You got other things to focus on in Engineering school.
