I was in a pinch and didn't want to clog my brand new catalytic converter. Better performance and smoother idle was just a bonus.
The 45-55 jerk was starting to disturb me.. something had to give

I don't think that's true... the CEL should at least blink with a misfire, regardless of how many coils might be bad. If that was true, you'd have a code for more than one cylinder misfiring every time you had a misfire CEL, and that doesn't happen. But heyy I've been wrong before.
