Default trans. fluid questions

it's about time to change trans. fluid and filter on my 06 5.4. what brand would you all recommend and do i need an additve? the reason i ask is because when i had my 96 with the e4od i was told i was supposed to have added an additive to the fluid which i was unaware of and at 70000 miles i had the torque converter replaced. is this still the case with 04-08 models?

As J-625 states, MERCON V, and there is no mention in my 2005 owners manual as to any additive needed.

By the way, you are aware that if you have the transmission pan dropped, that only gets you 4 quarts of fresh fluid....the torque converter holds about 5 quarts more.

I suppose that if you are dropping the pan every 20K and putting in 4 quarts of fresh synthetic Mercon V, then there are fresh additives being replenished into the transmission. As I've stated, heat is the number one killer to automatic transmissions, and heat breaks down oil and their additives.

I'm still not a fan of just replacing 4 out of 9 quarts though. It's kind of like only draining half of your motor oil on each oil change....

However, If your transmission is not giving you any problems, I'd continue with what you are doing. Can't argue with success!
