From what I understand, the idea of back-flushing is to intentionally disturb built up "crud" and get it out. Kind of like hosing off an air filter from the back side.
I agree with you guys that it's just not a good idea for multiple reasons. There are "mechanics" that do fairly stupid things all the time, and in every town.

The only thing that I have heard of "back flushing" is a radiator. I'm not sure that you can "flush" a transmission.
