I'm gonna try and do as much as possible DIY and my dads friend is the head mechanic at our local school bus garage and he knows everything about 7.3's. Do you guys think I should do this?

The main thing i'd watch out for would be the transmission. As for engine, i'm not 100% on the last year for the forged rods, its either 00 or 01 so you could have the forged or PMR's. and it'll have the older style interior, as opposed to the 02-03 interior. Other than that, should be good

Check for gooseneck, will tell a lot about its life. Watch for blow by. Google how to check. If engine is cold watch for any sign of white smoke at start up. Just keep in mind with a turbo diesel, maintenance is almost double than gas and replacement parts are more expensive.
