Default Towing in O/D

Can anyone offer any advice ( from experience ) about towing in OD? I'm about to pull my 6000lb. travel trailer 4500km up and down the I-5 and I'd rather be able to use OD. Will I "burn it up"? How hot is too hot?

You can do it if you want, but it will shift a ton (it'll actually be the converter locking in and out tho). Since you have an evo, just get a baseline tranny temp reading with o/d off and towing, then turn on o/d and just make sure it doesn't get too much hotter. If it does it would be wise to just leave o/d off. IMO flat land you will be fine, but in the hills you will want it off.

X2. You'll know when to shut it off. The truck will seem like it's 'searching' for the right gear, downshifting, upshifting, then downshifting again. You got the extra trans cooler?

Ya, I've got the tranny cooler. I've pulled it up to Whistler and was surprised how little the tranny "searched". The converter stayed locked much longer than I expected.

A lot will depend on your gear ratio and tire size. Can you provide any specs? Any changes here could impact your ability to use OD while towing. This tranny has very small od clutches and uses the reverse clutch to aid OD. It is very easy to overheat and do damage before you have overheated your fluid. Don't get me wrong, you still want to keep an eye on the tranny temps but I would recommend staying out of OD under 60-65mph. A few $ for gas or $$$$ for a tranny.

I'd be more worried about running a canned programmer and an intake on an 06 5.4L while trying to tow than the transmission. Lean motor + towing+ some time= the need for new motor.

Good. I'd keep her in 3rd under 60 and maybe even 65 if you notice a rise in temps or you feel it swicthing back and forth.
