Default Tow Package - Brake Controller

I have a 2006 F150 (5.4L) with the tow package installed.
What I am wondering is does that mean that I have the bake controller installed?

I am going to pick up a camper trailer this week and the seller asked if I have the correct hook-ups for the brake controller as well as the lights?

Any idea on how I check to see if I have that>

Cheers!
Dave

If you don"t see a Brake control mounted below your dash then you don't have one. A factory tow package only means you have a hitch, a plug with all the wires needed. There are some connections you may have to make under the hood. IE charge line and maybe the Brake control wire. In some years of Fords a fuse and or relay. There should be a plug under your dash to plug a brake controller in to. If the controller has a plug. Other wise you can get a harness that plugs into the plug under your dash. But then you need to connect the wires to your brake control using butt connectors or what ever you have handy. If you truck was here I could have it up and going in 20 min for you. If your handy you could do this yourself. Otherwise take the truck to your local RV dealer and have them do it.

Thanks for the response.

I did some sluthing around in this site and my truck. I don't have the controller installed, but the previous owner did give me the factory wire harness and relay that I need to install and connect to the brake controller of my choise that I will purchase tomorrow.

Does anyone have any pros or cons to the proportional style or time delay style of brake controller?

Cheers!

Thumbs up

I installed one recently and use it to pull our 5200lb travel trailer, it works great! Installation took about 15 minutes and if you get the correct adapter its all plug and play connections.

Anyone looking for a brake controller should consider the Journey HD
P/N# 52740

They are fair priced.... ~$60.00 and the best part.... made in the USA!

Proportional braking is much smoother than the time delay types. Get the proportional controller if it fits your budget.

Proportional. I use a Tekonsha. Install was 5 min, with the right plug assembly.
