Default Tire Chains

Hello all,

I know this topic has been talked about a lot, but there doesn't seem to be a concrete answer. I have a 2006 4x4 (f150 of course) and the tires I have, LT275/65/18 (along with a few others mentioned), evidently aren't allowed to run snow chains/cables. However, it does go on further to say that cables that are S rated are ok on the tire sizes that aren't mentioned..Confusing, I know.

Now if I simply changed the tires to a LT275/70/18, does that mean I can run chains and cables? My thought would be no, but the Ford manual isn't too helpful about this tire chain dilemma.

I'm just curious if any of you out there are running a tire chain or cable that is "S" rated on the rear (only) of their 2004-2008 F150s.

Thanks for any help

I know a lot about tires but not much about chains... Don't need them where in from lol. But I wouldn't worry about chains man, just put them on and drive slow cuz you don't want to throw them. I believe that to be the reason the manual is so sketch with them.

Is the S rating for the chain/cable a speed rating? When would you ever go 112mph with snow chains?

I usually never use chains either, but where I live the mountain passes sometimes require them, regardless of M+S tire or 4x4.

The "S" rating, I believe, refers to the size of the chain. Lol I think the chains would break long before 112 mph.

Or your teeth would break from the vibes! What little I do know about them is you aren't going fast at all with them.

If i remember right, the last set of chains my dad bought for his old plow truck at work had a speed rating with the chain. Do not remember the exact speed, but it was fairly slow, maybe 35mph...but dont quote me. I dont think that truck has ever seen 35mph since he got it 15 years ago. But i know that it feels like the truck is going to vibrate to death at 25 on a non snow packed road.

I am looking for the same information for the 275/55/20 tires, and ran across these as options. A but pricier than standard chains, but exploring as an option.

Not trying to sidetrack your original question, but wanted to present these as an option and ask if anyone had experience with these.
