I honestly think without a complete tear down and inspection it is questionable. If it looks that bad on top, does it look better or worse?

Yea. That's kind of where I'm at with it. unsure what should be done. it ran fine before, just the start up knock so I think it'll be ok for a bit. after a little more digging, I found that I didn't clean the pick up tube nearly as good as I thought. I blew compressed air an brakleen threw it before. I pulled it out tonight and it was packed full of old timing guide pieces. so, in all fairness it was my stupidity that probably caused the majority of the issues.

Well I have definitely seen worse. When it comes to those camshafts (and more specifically the journals), the only advice I have is probably terrible. If you plan on dropping a new motor in it eventually anyway, then put those suckers back on with the new(free) timing parts.

haha. kind of what I expected. I'm not familiar with internal engine work, but I'm pretty sure them grooves shouldn't be there. I'm kinda thinking I'll throw it together and run it as long as I can. I just stumbled across a wrecked 05, guy claims it has reman motor an he wants $3000. so I'm weighing my options to buy it an part the rest an store the motor til mine blows.

Depending on how bad it's wrecked, talk him down a bit and that may be a good deal. Don't forget about the trade and sell section of the forum. There's a bunch of us that have little things we want fixed.
As for the grooves, as long as the camshaft is still tight and not bouncing around, it'll be "good enough" for a while. Sometimes you have to just get by for a little bit, then fix it correctly.

Kinda off topic but I wanna grab a tuner go towing, and to keep an eye on oil psi an that stuff. there's a guy here with a 2 yr old edge evo for 250. seem fair?

ok, new issue. I put it all back together, cams back where they were, cranked it over and it sounds out of time. I pulled the covers back off an the r on driver side phaser is up with keyway in crank at 12 o clock. is that correct? I have no idea how I messed up the timing, I've done it 3 times on this truck with no issues so I'm at a loss

lol

It should never be bouncing around or loose in any way. It would not last at all if it was.

OP

Ya those grooves are pretty bad and likely happened prior to all of this starting. Especially true if you found parts in the tube.

I agree if you plan on keeping the truck, start your search for a new motor now. However buying used is a crap shoot unless you pull the cams to have a look.

Good luck, I hope you get it all worked out.
