Default time for new tires, look for a good life span

my mud terrain tires and just about slicks so im way over due for tires. at this point the only off roading i do involves gravel or unpaved roads so i think a nice A/T would be best. my first thought was BFG but in my tire size (37/12.5/20), they are $560 each. i saw that khumo (i think) or some othe brand had an A/T for $350 each. the thing i dont know is how do they compare as far as tread life is concerned.....thats were you guys come in. what do you guys recommend?

and for the record, i search, all i found was best off road tire, nobody really talked about life span.

thanks guys

ill preface this with the info that i do 95% of my driving on the highway. the rest is a mix of gravel and a little mud on a minimum maintenance road.

with the one set of toyo mudd terrains i had on my blazer i only got about 15k miles on them before i sold them off to some kid who "had to have mudd tire". they were mounted on the blazer the day i got the truck and with in 1000 miles i swore them off. they were a PITA because my milage sucked on the highway and they never seemed to wear well. i took it to 3 different alignment shops and all of them told me it was aligned properly. i rotated them every 5000 miles and by the time i got rid of them they shook going down the road so bad i thought i was going to have to get a new brain.

after that i went to a firestone destination AT and will never have anything other than an AT tire. when i bought my 150 i found a set of Peerless Widetrack Baja ATs and they have been a great tire. almost 40k miles on the and they still have a bunch of life in them. after a quick google search, i dont see where you can by them new anymore so ill probably hit up my local CO-OP and see what they can get me that is comparable.

thanks, i appreciate the reply.

i should probably also ask, what is the typical life of an AT? my budy had BFGs that had over 40k on them when he sold them with plenty of life left, and rubbinsracin says he got 40k out of his ATs, so is 40k+ typical?

I have Falken Wildpeaks on my truck and am quite happy with them. They have a 50k mile warranty and come in sizes up to 37x12.5... but unfortunately only in a 17" wheel. They do have a 355/60R20 which is pretty close.

i think that the tires i have are a 50k mile tire. i dont think i will have any problem getting 60k out of them. i rotate them every 5000 miles. and every 10k miles i dismount them and switch the side the tire is on in order to keep them pointed in the same direction. obviously the tread is starting to get lower on them because they have 40k on them, but this weekend we had some serious flooding and our gravel roads were really torn up and muddy and i had no problem towing my race trailer with the car on it even when the tires started to get on some really soft terrain. i tow about 5k miles a year and they have worn exceptionally well considering.

thanks for the quick replies. so what im gathering is that most if not all ATs have a pretty decent life span and spending $560 on BFGs would be excessive?
