This may be so for you - certainly not for me. I typically run Ford products for 10 to 15 years and have very little to bitch about. Maintenance is 95% of the answer. When repairs are necessary, use good parts and procedures.

The metal on metal design is the curse these phasers have, and I'd be lying if I said ford didn't leave us in the lurch... Because they did...

2. The spark plugs, but the problem is very manageable and a 1 time offense that is usually only dealt with once.

3. Tensioners, also manageable with extra gasket protection and fords redesigned temperature..

Other then these things, the motor is a great design...
I agree, when its running good the motor is great, lots of low end torque. But the 3 main issues are gigantic problems for the average person. We're not all mechanics and most don't have the knowledge or time to tackle the fixes ourselves.

I've got one ofthe worst offending years...2004. Granted I'm only at 85k miles but mine has never seen a dealer. I did plugs and VCT. My tensioners are good to go and so are my phasers...granted thsts so far.

There are so many of these trucks out there and yes forums are primary bitch zones. All of em have issues. Hell, my 97 explorer was suppose to be ****...went 210 with almost all original...my wife's 02 explorer blew trans at 150k as these were bad trans...sold it to my work friend and after a new trans his daughter has had it another 3 years and it's at 200k and still running great.

It's not so easy to generalize when the sales numbers are so high. Look at the manufacturers with highest recall rates....Toyota is one of tops. Does thst mean they make the worst vehicles? Of course not. But volume is way up there. Honda also has plenty of issues. Everyone wants to say their engines last forever...often they do! But not always and Honda guys don't ever wanna talk transmissions.

Buy it!! Love it and take care of it. That's a lot of it. Rest is simply luck. And that goes for all of em!
