Exclamation Thinking of purchasing 2004 F-150 5.4 that may have the Cam phaser Tick.

I just put money down on a 2004 5.4 with 138,000miles ran real strong idled good, didnt notice the tick until i popped the hood, didnt think anything of it. The plugs and wires had just been replaced as well as a few coil packs, well on the bottom of one of the reciepts the seller showed me (after i gave him a deposit) i noticed in the notes it stated : Recommend replacement of the cam phasers. This was from a Ford Dealership. Do i run away while im only in the hole $200.00 bucks or do i buy this nice 1 owner truck with an extensive libarary of Maintence records, just based on this Tick???? Suggestions anyone? BTW asking price is $7500.00 KBB stated just under 10K for this truck.

It sounds like you would be getting a good enough deal to just buy it and even put the $800-900 for Ford to replace the phasers. I got lucky when I found my truck because the guy had replaced the left side phasers but not the right. So I heard the tick when I test drove it and told him I'd buy the truck if he got it fixed . Next day I met him at Ford dealership and he paid for the fix. But you're getting it cheap enough to not sweat it for a little while.

I'm certainly no expert but pretty much every '04-'08 F150 I know of around where I live has the cam phaser noise (including mine) & none of us have had it fixed. None of the trucks have had any issues thus far. That's not to say nothing could happen but at that price it's hard to go wrong.

when mine get warmed up it ticks but its been like that since i bought is used with 28k miles on it. im gonna switch to 5w30 next oil change and it should quiet it down some. plus i like the sound lol

They all tick, it is simply how loud, as long as it is a tick and not a knock, and doesn't idle like a powerstroke diesel, don't worry about it.

Of course the dealership recommended changing them out......more $ in the dealer's account! Not to say it DOESN'T need it or wouldn't be a good idea.....but would it stop me from a good deal on an otherwise nice truck? No.

I agree I got 189000 on my 05 cams Tick
a little but not crazy and it still runs great. Using oil is an issue I am starting to be concerned about

The new revised VCT solenoids in conjunction with 5w-30 oil will help quiet the ticking and promote better wear characteristics of the motor... For that price, if the truck is clean, and solid.... I'd buy it up!
Cam phaser ticking is an inherent sound from the system itself being hydraulically controlled by oil pressure...

Damn good price either way if the rest of the truck is solid. I'd get the front end checked out, and if the ball joints, tie rods, and IWEs (if 4x4) are good, buy it.

i really was considering backing out of the deal, but for 6,000 I could get a rusted out 2003. these people in my state are smoking the good stuff. Ive found a ton of $7000.00 2003 supercrews with completely rusted out rockers.
