Default Is there a Ford tech on this forum, have question.

I am ordering heads using the casting numbers on the originals, left 3L3E 6090 KB, Right 3L3E 6C064 KE. Found these numbers and ordered them, sadly they came as 16mm spark plugs and mine are 12mm. Talked with RA, supplier, and they said I need to use these left 9L3E 6C064 BA, Right 9L3E 6090 BA. So i sent the others back and ordered these. They sent Left 9L3E 6C064 BA and Right 3L3E 6C6064 KB! Both with 12mm spark plugs. So the right one lines up with the timing but the left one well it was a long day and when it didn't initially line up I had to stop for the evening. Are these two compatible? Maybe they put in a right side cam in the left hand head? I'm guessing the cams are different from left and right? Following my Ford manuals to do this job, TDC #1 and then use the crank timing gear to then rotate counter clockwise key way to about 11:00 position so timing mark is directly at the bottom 6:00. Then string the chain to where the #5 lobes are suppose to be but off a tooth and the chain is so tight its against the post for the rail on the upper slack adjuster. Gonna pull all the cam followers tomorrow and line it all up to the appropriate timing marks and see where the cam lobes are.... RA is Rock Auto.

Any help will be much appreciated!

Default Not a tech but

Don't turn engine until you lift cams ,no valves open . Then set up timing marks . Also you need to soak lash adjusters in oil after you hand prime them , hand oil cams too . All cam journals have to go back exactly how they come out , mark them carefully . Mine came marked from factory .
I would like to know if there is a right and left cam .
Review the excellent final fix sticky on here . By svares I believe .
The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound,You might want to put a good melling oil pump in her too .

What year truck you working on ? I assume it's a 5.4l.. The heads changed in motors with a build date of 10/9/07 .. That's why the difference in plugs.

I have 2008 5.4 3 valve. Mine was built in the later part of 08. My question is will the different head work, as they sent one with the same casting number as my original Right 3L3E and Left with a 9L3E which is different. Also are the cams different right and left? Please refer to the numbers I previously posted.

you have to have the correct heads for the motor build date..not the truck build date, what plugs did you pull from the old heads ? did you have brown COP boots or Black ? was there a engine build sticker on the valve cover ? it will show the motor build date on it. The problem with ordering from rock auto is ...it's not by VIN.

Valve cover sticker says 10/22/2007. The original heads have 12mm SP 509 Motorcraft plugs. So brown boots. RA does show a VIN 5 for some selections mine is a V, Flex Fuel and they don't show that. I have the timing set on and the marks are lining up, all cam followers installed and I would like to turn the engine by hand 4 revolutions to verify no interference.
