Tach problem, goes crazy and all over the place.
My tach in my 2004 F150 XLT 5.4, jumps all over the place and even goes down past the bottom. It may stop anywhere when I shut engine off. It's never in the proper place. It may be at 1500 or 5500 on stop up.
This is the only gauge acting up, and it has done it since 54,000 miles. I have 147,000 on truck now. Please help!

I'd say by now you may need to consider replacing the cluster. Not sure if the tach by itself can be removed and replaced from the cluster, as these gauges are soldered onto a circuit board.
As a last gasp try, you could remove the clusters cover, then unplug/plug in the clusters top two connectors to see if one of them had a poor connection.

It's probably the stepper motor, which is what drives the needle. If you're good with unsoldering and soldering on a small circuit board, it can be fixed.
