Default stumbling at high rpms

So...bought a new to me 06 with a 5.4 and the tow package about a week and a half ago and wouldnt you know it, the check engine light came on the other day after hard acceleration (downshifted from 3rd to 2nd) and it seemed to studder a bit initially after the downshift. The check engine light hasnt turned off since and it did it again yesterday in the same scenario (downshift to merge) and was in higher rpms (3500+). I have a hunch that this is a coil pack that's bad or spark plug wires shorting out because I have experienced this before in a different vehicle and that is what it tuened out to be. I was just wondering if anybody had some other ideas as to what it could be or if this might be a common problem with these trucks as they get close to 100k on the odometer...

Thanks in advance for the help

No. Go to your local auto parts store (autozone, orileys, sometimes even maps). They usually have a code puller you can use right there in the lot. Or you can go to Walmart and buy one of.the cheap ones for like $30

So just to clarify...autozone will let me do it free of charge? Any info on if pep boys will? They are more local around me and I have coupons and special deals there for being a rewards member
