Question strange.... 9.75 differential cover instead of 8.8?

quick question... i just finished replacing the differential oil and the cover (was badly rusted outside). But when i order the new cover online, the cover for my year/model truck was suppose to be an 8.8 with 10 bolts. after receiving the package, i notice that the one installed in the car was larger, and further inspection show me that the differential cover was a 9.75 12 bolts. long story short, i bought a 9.75 cover, perform the oil change, and all is good.

BUT, is the 2005 F150 Lariat suppose to have that? I notice that the rusted cover was also a replacement (with no magnet inside by the way), both things are kind of strange for 48k miles.

...my first guess maybe the previous owner hit the cover with something... in my inspection of the gears in the differential,

i also find a writing saying OK....

...my second guessing is that the previous owner replaced the axle... the brakes in the rear are also disc.. not drum as i was expecting....

What is the axle code printed on your door sticker? I would guess you came stock with a 9.75. Also, I *think* all the 2004+ models are 4 wheel discs, not drums. I know my 05 FX4 is 9.75 rear with discs.

Yep.. 9.75" with a 3.55 open diff. I'm pretty sure the 4.6L's got the 8.8 rear and the 5.4L's got the 9.75".

I'm gonna bring this one back for a couple questions. How can you tell what kind of diff you have? I've got my original window sticker that says I have a 3.55 limited slip, but is that an 8.8, 9.75 or a 10.25? Secondly, what are those measurements of?

I was looking at my owners manual today for the right amount of oil for it and it's different between them, so I didn't buy any yet. Based on readings in this forum I believe I have a 9.75, but I'm not positive. BTW my door sticker has an "H9" under the transaxle code. Any help would be appreciated.

The measurement (8.8 , 9.75 , 10.25 ) is of the ring gear . H9 Should be a 3.55 limited slip .

Stomper -
You know what ring gear size goes with a 3.55? Is it in the owners manual anywhere? Thanks.

so if you have 9.75 (12 bolts in the cover) and 3.55, then, yours are like mine. i used a bit less than 3 bottles of 32oz each, to fill it up.

Quick Reply: strange.... 9.75 differential cover instead of 8.8?
