Sounds reasonable, straight meaning straight through.

Maybe it's a regional thing or I'm just old and not thinking straight

Straight pipe means nothing between the exhaust manifolds to the tail pipe.
Leaving the cats in is definitely a good move. If you're just doing the muffler there won't be any codes. At that point the emissions aspect of the exhaust has been dealt with.
