stereo reverse wire

I don't have it handy but under the drivers door floor board the wire goes there. I'll take a look after at my program but that's where I tied in.
I tried writing from my tablet but it was being a pain... Go with the LM7805 as you've found. You can use resistors and it's very likely it's just a relay anyways but when you're running your vehicle, it's of course at 13.5-14.5 volts... When you calculate the resistors required at 12 volts you're probably actually hitting a higher voltage to the relay than expected... i.e. the resistors are running at 6 volts (maybe not that high - I haven't calculated it). It'll likely be fine but the LM7805 you're going to get a 5 volts no matter what. I will caution though, try it for a bit and feel the LM7805... They will generate heat depending on the load (relay shouldn't draw much - again assuming that's what it is) and the input voltage (13.5-14.5). Before you put it back in, just be sure it won't get so hot it'll melt your plastics if it touches. It really shouldn't but I'll mention it anyways. That's why the LM7805 has an eye on it, for mounting to a heatsync. I think you'll be fine but I'd rather tell you.
If it's a relay, you shouldn't have an issue either way.

Thanks guys,
-So I did use the 7805. I will mount it to the steel frame inside the dash. So far it works to eliminate the popping noise.
-The wire for reverse on my 04 is the same colour as the other years. I was just looking in the center consol, it is actually down by the fuse box.
I soldered everything up, sounds good, camera works. Just have to wait for the dash mount kit and it'll be donezo!
