Default Steering Wheel Shake

Fellas,

I need some advice. 'SOMETIMES' when driving around 60-70 miles an hour I get the old steering wheel shake like when having unbalanced tires. The problem is that it doesn't happen all the time. It seems like if the tires weren't balanced I would get a harmonic inbalance and 'shaking of the steering wheel' all the time betweeen 60 and 70.

Could this be a suspension issue? something bent? Why doesn't it happen all the time?

Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks,

I started to get this after my leveling kit but I've had all the components checked and tightened 2 times, new wheels balanced and check twice and 2 alignments and I still get it around 60+. It's not bad but bad enough for me to notice. I can't figure it out.

Do you ever go mudding? I know when I do I have to clean the inside of the wheels out really well or my truck will do the same thing. Maybe you have some mud or dirt on the inside of your wheel check that out.

Check air pressures, I had that (I went to 20" wheels with the levelling kit) and had a shake at times. I bumped the air pressures up to 40PSI & it went away. Might not be it, but something to check...

Agree on checking for mud on the inside of your wheels. Also if you have the Pirelli's, they give me a vibration when cold or having set for a day. BTW the Pirelli's suck, the ford mechanic I know described them as junk and I agree.

Me personally, I don't go mudding....off roading yes, sand and crap yes but it's been a long time and I have washed, undercoated and wax/cleaned my truck.

My tires are brand new, maybe 100 miles on them. On my 255's I had the shake and on my nittos I still have it but not bad. My old tires were the general crap tires with 62k on them and they were trash.

Regarding air pressure, When I got them put on shop had 35psi and I was told by friends and this board that was to low for 295/70/17 so I went to 40-42psi. My shake is probably 1/8 of an inch or less in shake on my steering wheel. My wife hardly notices it but I can see it like it was a light from heaven. My old tires it was close to 1/2 so something improved.

BTW Hawgdriver, I don't mean to be stealing your thread.

Good points, i hadn't thought of the air pressure. I have BFG 315/70/17s. I guess I will try uping the air pressure.

Thanks fellas!

yeah my uncle had the same problem with his work van, which was also a ford, but he tried balancing the tires, adding the right amount of air, checking the steering fluid, you name it, the mechanic couldn't even figure out while the steering wheel was vibrating. Till this day it still vibrates
