Default Steering Wheel (Play in wheel)

Hi, Since this is my first FORD of any kind. Just wondering if its is normal to have some play in the steering wheel. Before the tires will move there is about 1 inch total play on the wheel before moving any wheels. It drives well and does not seem to drift at all but just wondering if this is normal or it should be addressed. Thanks

First thing to check would be your inner and outter tie rods..then the joint in the steering shaft going into your rack...then your rack and pinion

Your steering column has a Ujoint in addition to your intermediate shaft (what Ethan described). This is more difficult to diagnose, but could also be the issue. I know mine is lose and giving me a direction reversal clunk.
