Steering Shaft gone bad- Reasons?
I have a 2008 150 4X4 with 5.4. 95,000 miles and I have developed a steering problem. Pump and all checked out and since I still have 5000miles left on the xtended warranty I decided to take it to the dealer. I was told it needs a new steering shaft. I assume he means lower shaft. Unfortunately this is for some reason " normal wear and tear item" under the warranty so it is not covered. Just as if it were a brake job or something along that line. Damn! I have owned many trucks and cars and I have never heard of a steering shaft wear out or bind up under normal conditions and less the 100K miles. Anybody have thoughts on this? Is this a design or material problem in the late model 150's? Or is there something that I could have done to prevent this?

sounds right
From looking around on here seems like this is not an uncommon issue. Still I am disappointed that it even happened...figured my truck had better parts in it than this. Dealer shop called back and quoted 500 for parts and labor. I still might argue with the warranty people on this...I do not believe Ford would have their steering considered wear and tear maintenance like brakes or something.

Wow quite a wave of bad steering shafts lately! The reason for failure is simply a poorly designed part and a poor quality u-joint that eventually fails. I would not accept that it is a "wear item." This is not a driveshaft where the u-joints eventually need replacing. You should never have to touch a steering shaft IMO.

Steering shaft gone bad
I agree! Well, I am going to be talking to the warranty people about it today. I want to double check this all with the service department manger. Maybe they put it in for warranty work the wrong way. They replaced the right side exhaust manifold and that was all covered by warranty thankfully!

If they give you any more trouble, just start going up the Ford chain of command. It's not easy but they'll eventually do the right thing. Hopefully the dealership will come to its senses before then.

I have a 2005 F150 with 49,000 miles on it. The steering wheel has some play in it which appears to be coming from u joint play on the lower shaft. Shop repairs are about $350. I have not yet taken it to the dealer to see what they will say however I expect they will say it is not coverd since the warranty has expired. The repair shop said that they see this often in F150's. I am contemplating doing the work myself. Thoughts and other's experiences are welcome.

I had to replace the lower steering shaft on my last truck (2004 xlt) Bought a new one on e-bay from Tasca Ford for $125 iirc, put it on myself. Fairly easy job to do. My 2004 had just over 100,000 miles at the time. This is a fairly common issue on the 2004-08 model years. **** poor design.
