Default Steering

I have a 2008 f150 4x4 with 65,000 miles on it. Somtimes when I come to a stop I lose my power steering. If I rev up the engine I get it back. First thing I did was check the power steering fulid. It`s between min and max. The color looks good. No noise from the pump. But I think the pump is going bad. What do you think? Thank You

Mike

Is the steering stiff in spots of the turn or stiff throughout the turn.

When the steering shaft binds up it feels a lot like you have no power steering.

Steering shaft binding is a pretty common thing

I replaced the belt. No change. Still hard to turn wheel at idle. Pulled steering shaft to check u joints. Like new nice and smooth no binding. Power steering fluid change is next. If that doesn`t do it the pump is next.

Replacing the pump looks like a PITA. Do I have to take the pully off to get it out or will it come off with the pump? Thank You

Dang...would not think you would wear out a pump with only 65K on the truck..

Yes, you can take the pump off without removing the pulley. I took my pump off when I did my phasers. My pulley would not come off no matter what puller I used, so 2 bolts on top, 1 bolt on bottom. 10mm, wrench. It does help if they are ratcheting wrenches but not really necessary, loosen top bolts, then the bottom and gradually pull the pump away from the block so you have room to finish taking out the bottom bolt. Also, I did not remove my pump hoses, so you may have to remove those first so that you have leverage to break them loose.
