Default Starter Issue - intermittently not engaging

Hey there-

New posting to the forum. I've already fixed two issues using the forum, so thanks for that! Now:

I have a 2006 F150 5.4 and about once every twenty starts or so, my starter won't engage properly, and it will spin but grind against the flywheel. Usually, if I wait a minute or so, it will engage and off I go. If it was an old truck, I'd go get a new solenoid (the kind that pushes the gear into place on the starter), but I have no idea if these new starters are like this, or what the deal is. I'm guessing bad solenoid, but will I have to replace the whole starter or what? Any other ideas what is going on?

Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

I would go with the whole starter just in case. Has there been any other symptoms? A friend had the same issue on his older 90s model chevy truck and it turned out to be his thrush washers (I think that's what they are called) had come out and his crank was walking some and his flywheel was actually moving. I hope that is not your issue, good luck with it being the starter.
