Depend on your mechanical ability. I don't believe it's that hard you just need some patience, the lisle tool and most likely a 12 pack. I would suggest a motorvac service from ford before hand or at least run some techron thru the tank before you start. Follow the TSB and you should be good to go. MC plugs are only 7.99 at O'reillys auto parts.

Well I am a shade tree mechanic and have built many engines. So I guess I should be able to do that then. Thanks.

If you have rebuilt an engine then you will have no problem with this. Good luck and hope you don't break any!

Default Spark Plug Replacement

I just finished replacing the 8 plugs in my 2002 5.4l engine. It is not easy to get at some of them because of the fuel injection rails that block access to the coil retaining screw. I spent probably 3 to 4 hours, and a lot of that time was spent trying different tools to find what would fit in the congested spaces. It was a frustrating job for that reason . The plugs were very tight but came out without breaking. You need a spark plug socket with the rubber insert and an assortment of ratchet extensions for some of the plugs toward the back of the engine where access is more difficult. The bracket holding the power steering reservoir must be removed to get at one plug on that side. I had to slip a piece of pipe over the ratchet for the 2 rear plugs in order to develop enough torque to break them loose. Used a smear of never-seize on the new plugs and all seems well, cured an intermittent stumble.

If your guy works for 25 bucks a flat rate hour and charges you cost on parts then I want to meet him

Yea, 5.4.

I was having the cam phasers done at the same time. Total for the job was $1700 including parts (phasers, gaskets, plugs).

The guy that did the work is a Ford Master Tech and he said the plugs on these motors are a piece of cake with a special tool that he has. He didn't need it on mine though, they all came out easy. 75k on the truck.

I do usually get a discount from him though, so that might be why it was so cheap. He takes very good care of his return customers

Just did mine myself

+run 1 bottle of seafoam in half a tank two times

+then when your ready to change them "have a lisle tool just in case" while the engine is hot spray some pb blster on the plugs

+wait for it to get warm and turn them a quarter turn very slowly

+let the pb set in for 20 min

+then work those bad boys out "no breaks for me"

+crank the motor while the plugs are out to get debris out

+ took me and my buddy 3 hours and lots of patience but it was with it! Hope that helps

btw I used e3 plugs what do you guys think of those?

I had to bring my truck back to the dealership because it started to run rough. Accelerating would get real sluggish and at a red light it seemed to want to stall. The service tech said one of my new plugs had carbon which is/was normal? Doesn't sound right, but it's running normally now. Does this sound right?

Its actually not near that difficult to do on the 04+. The problems start when the plugs break which is a problem with the 04-07 (ish) 5.4 3V.

To anyone curious about doing this job yourself and saving some cash I wrote up a little how-to on this topic. https://www.f150forum.com/f72/how-sp...-3v-v8-116291/
